Worlwide beach cleanup successful!
Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:21

On the 21st of March soul surf project Bali supported the worldwide beach cleanup 'Ocean Initiatives', initiated by the Surfrider foundation, this year the 15th edition. Together with our partner Eco Bali and Coca Cola, both organizations concerned with the environmental problems of Bali, a beach cleanup was organized on Batubelig beach. On this specific day beaches were cleaned all over the world to make the beach and the ocean a better place. With ninety percent of ocean pollution coming from the land, it's crucial that the coast is cleaned, as well as lakes and rivers. This year more than 800 beach, lake and river cleanups were organized worldwide. The results are not yet known, but based on last years figures (in 2009: 500 cleanups) it's very promising!

Why Batubelig beach? Near this beach there aren't many hotels, so much of the waste is just lying on the beach, waiting to be swallowed by the ocean. Also this is the beach were soul surf project Bali always organizes a beach cleanup for the orphans, as part of the environmental lessons they get. The waste they collect is taken back to the classroom where the kids learn about the damage of the different types of waste for the environment. After the environmental lessons the kids learn how to conquer the best waves in the world by providing surflessons. One of the best ways to appreciate the elements is by being in it. When the children are surfing they are surrounded by the elements of mother nature and enjoying it!

Everybody helped picking up the rubbish; the kids, the lifeguards, people just passing by. Almost 60 kilo of rubbish was collected and the beach looked beautiful again! Eco Bali provided the waste bags and picked up all the bags at the end of the event. Coca Cola was present with their Eco Mobile. In this initiative people could find information about environmental issues, games and videomaterial. Summarized a very succesful day and certainly to be continued....
